How To Make A Great First Impression

In this article I’m going to discuss several tips and tricks that you can use to make a great first impression with just about anybody. We often try to teach our kids not to judge a book by its cover, but unfortunately in the real world that happens every single day. Making a good first impression is an important part of life and that’s what I want to discuss today.

When it comes right down to it, those stingy rules of etiquette from yesteryear really do still apply in many cases today. Knowing the basics of etiquette can make a huge difference in how other people actually see us or think of us.

First of all, when introducing yourself for the first time be sure to say your first name as well as your last name and then add something personal about yourself. It doesn’t have to be a very long thing or an important thing, just something that differentiates yourself. A good example is to say something like “hello, good to meet you, I’m Ted Miller, I’m Mark’s dad”.  See how easy adding that quick little personal thing at the end was? At the same time it can make a huge impact and add the impression of thoughtfulness to the other person as well as set you apart in the other person’s mind.

Likewise when you’re introducing somebody to somebody else, you should always introduce the least important person to the most important person. Of course, “most important” is subjective but generally it doesn’t have anything to do with personal worth but is more a matter of seniority or age. For instance you would probably introduce a younger person to an older person, not vice versa. Likewise, you would introduce the vice president of one company to the president of another company not vice versa.

Another important etiquette tip is to always hold your glass in your left hand in social settings. This is a simple tip but it can be important. You should always hold your glass in your left hand so that your right hand is free for shaking hands with people. This keeps you from looking sloppy while you switch your class from hand to hand, and it also keeps your right hand free from coldness, clamminess, and condensation that may form on the outside of the glass. There’s nothing more ridiculous looking than watching somebody switch their drink from one hand to another while trying to wipe off the right-hand on their pants and then trying to shake somebody’s hand!

So there you have three very simple tips to help you make a great first impression no matter what situation you are in. These tips are incredibly simple yet most people don’t bother with them but you would be amazed what a huge impact they can have when making a first impression on just about anyone. How about you, are you guilty of breaking these simple rules? Now you have no excuses!
